How it works

Workload = outlets × visits per month × minutes per visit. Capacity = work hours minus daily travel, per rep per month.

Required reps = workload ÷ capacity. Under-covered by more than a quarter-rep shows up as missed beats and falling numeric distribution.

Over-staffing is flagged too — rebalance territories before adding outlets or headcount.

Worked example

500 outlets needing 2 visits a month at 30 minutes each is 500 hours of selling time. After 90 minutes of daily travel, each rep has 156 effective hours — the territory needs 3.2 reps and has 2. The 'lazy sales team' was a maths problem.

Questions, answered

What visit frequency should we plan?

By outlet value: A-class weekly, B-class fortnightly, C-class monthly is a common starting point — then test whether frequency actually moves secondary.

Does this replace beat-plan software?

No — it sizes the team and territories; beat software schedules the days. Sizing first, software second.
