Pricing Power Assessment

Can you raise prices without losing the customer? Test the evidence first.

Pricing power is what customers do, not what we believe. Score eight dimensions honestly and get a power profile with the specific research to run before any price move.

Objective differentiation
Customers get something from us they measurably cannot get elsewhere
Switching effort
Changing supplier costs the customer real time, money or risk
Preference evidence
Customers choose us at equal or higher price — with proof, not anecdote
Price transparency
Customers cannot instantly compare our price against five alternatives
Substitute pressure
Alternatives (including doing nothing) are weak or inconvenient
Channel independence
No single channel or partner controls our access to demand
Buyer power
Purchases are not dominated by professional procurement squeezing price
Willingness-to-pay evidence
We have tested (not assumed) that customers pay for the value we claim

How it works

Eight dimensions scored 0–3: objective differentiation, switching effort, preference evidence, price transparency, substitutes, channel independence, buyer power, and willingness-to-pay evidence.

The profile separates dimensions where you have proof from those where you have hope — the validation list is generated from your weakest dimensions.

Deliberately conservative: a high score is a hypothesis to test with a pricing experiment, never a licence to raise prices blindly.

Worked example

A components maker scores high on switching effort (qualified tooling) but zero on willingness-to-pay evidence. The output: run a controlled price test on new orders before any list increase.

Illustrative figures, not a client outcome.

Questions, answered

What if we score high but customers threaten to leave over any increase?

Threats are negotiation, not behaviour. Test on a small cohort or new orders — real pricing power survives contact with an actual price rise.

How is this different from the discount simulator?

P03 computes the cost of a discount decision. This assesses whether your market position supports pricing moves at all — strategy before arithmetic.
