Jobs-to-Be-Done Interview Question Bank

Ask about the last real purchase, not imaginary future intentions.

People can't tell you what they will buy; they can tell you exactly what they bought and why. This bank builds a script around the last real purchase — the trigger, the search, the near-misses — with probes that get past polite answers.

  2. The triggerWhat specifically happened that made 'someday' become 'now'?
  3. The decisionWhat nearly stopped you from buying at all?
Coding worksheet: after each interview, log the trigger, the "hired" job, the fired alternative and the anxieties — in the customer's words. Ten coded interviews reveal more than a hundred survey rows.

How it works

Questions are organised by phase: opening, trigger, search, decision, after-purchase, plus probes. Pick 8–12 per interview.

Every question anchors to a real event ('the last time you…'), never a hypothetical ('would you…'). Hypotheticals produce fiction.

After each interview, code the trigger, the hired job, the fired alternative and the anxieties — in the customer's words.

Worked example

An appliance brand asks 'what made someday become now?' and hears the same trigger in 7 of 10 interviews: a festival visit from in-laws. The campaign shifts from product features to 'ready for the visit' — and the pitch finally lands because it mirrors a real moment.

Illustrative figures, not a client outcome.

Questions, answered

How many interviews is enough?

Patterns stabilise around 10–15 per segment. Stop when new interviews stop adding new triggers.

Who should interview?

Someone who didn't build the product. Founders hear confirmation; neutral interviewers hear the story.
